Mast cell disorders (systemic mastocytosis and mast cell activation syndrome) are a group of rare and complex conditions that are only now starting to be more widely known in the general medical community. Due to the rarity of these conditions, finding physicians in the Allergy community who have experience in their diagnosis and management is extremely difficult. Given the similarities of symptoms of mast cell disorders and other non-mast cell mediated conditions, it is vital to have Allergists who are not only experienced in assessing whether a patient truly meets criteria for a mast cell disorder, but those who recognize what other conditions must be considered to avoid misdiagnosis. It is also important to have Allergists who are able to communicate effectively with patients’ primary doctors and specialists to ensure they are receiving the best multidisciplinary care possible.

Windom Allergy recognizes that patients with mast cell disorders (and those who are suspected of having a mast cell disorder) are an underserved population in the medical field at large. We recognize that the paucity of mast cell specialists in Florida is a disservice to affected patients and have sought to remedy this by creating the Mast Cell Center of Florida. We strive to provide the best and most accurate resources for diagnosis and treatment of mast cell disorders, stay up to date on the most cutting-edge therapies, and help coordinate the best multidisciplinary care for our mast cell patients. We also strive to recognize alternative diagnoses that may be masquerading as a mast cell condition, so that patients can be properly and safely treated.

About the Mast Cell Center Medical Director

Tara Vinyette Saco, M.D.

Tara Vinyette Saco, M.D. has always had a special interest in mast cell disorders. Despite the rarity of these conditions, she continually stumbled upon these patients during her medical school, residency, and fellowship training. She saw the lack of dedicated mast cell experts in Florida compared to the northern United States, which often caused patients to have to travel great distances to receive the answers and treatment they deserved. This inspired her to pursue extra training in mast cell disorders at Brigham & Women with mast cell specialist, Mariana Castells, M.D., and bring that experience back to Florida. Her knowledge not only in mast cell conditions, but in comorbid conditions and alternative diagnoses helps her to provide the best and most comprehensive care possible.
